Course Description

Students will learn decision-making skills in the context of health information and issues.  In this activity-based and text-based course, students will apply reading, writing, and communication skills to content areas such as first aid, diseases, alcohol and tobacco, emotional and social health, and setting personal goals.

Goal 2 – writes using a range of forms for various purposes and audiences

Keeps health journal... takes notes... creates plan for healthy appearance (Chapter 2, "Wellness and Your Appearance")

Goal 3 - analyzes mental and social health information to develop a plan and monitoring system

Creates health goals and reflects on health habits (Chapter 3, "Wellness and Your Mental Health", and Chapter 4, "Wellness and Your Social Health")

Goal 4 – uses listening, observation, and record keeping to effectively promote healthy nutritional practices

Plans a healthy nutritional program (Chapter 5, "Meeting Your Nutrional Needs")

Goal 5 – develops understanding of factors in growth and development from childhood to aging issues and how body systems are affected

Reads varied texts such as health books, magazine articles, newspaper, internet resources... Uses note-taking and questioning strategies (Chapter 6, "Your Growth and Development" and Chapter 7, "Wellness and Your Body Systems")

Goal 6– understands control and prevention of communicable and non-communicable diseases... acquires skills to live safely and reduce health risks

 

Learns of diseases... creates an educational presentation outlining cause, effects, prevention, and cure or monitoring of disease (Chapter 11, "Communicable Diseases" and Chapter 12, "Noncommunicable Diseases")

 

Goal 7 – develops healthy safety and consumer habits, reads different materials for a variety of purposes

Reads varied texts such as health books, magazine articles, newspaper, internet resources...Uses note-taking and questioning strategies to build safe consumer habits (Chapter 13, 'Safety and Your Health" and Chapter 14, "Consumer and Public Health")

 

 

 

Course Resources / Materials

Textbook: Teen Health: Decision for Healthy Living; Glencoe, a division of Macmillan Publishing Company; 1990

 

Student work is to be kept in a section of each student’s three ring binder.  At the end of the semester all work goes home.

 

Evaluation/Grading Practices

Grades are based on daily class assignments, tests, and presentations.  Although some work is done in groups, there are no “group grades.”  Work is graded individually.  If a student is absent, work can be made up per Richland School District Policy.  Missing work will be counted as a zero.

 

Grading Scale

 A= 94%         B+ = 87%       C+ = 77%       D+ = 67%

 A- = 90%       B = 84%          C = 74%          D = 60%

                        B- = 80%        C- = 70%        F = below 60%
