The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven

by Sherman Alexie

Sherman Alexie is a Spokane Indian who writes from his own biases and includes corrosive language. Some community reviewers found that picturing Native Americans as drunks was objectionable, but others thought this "was a healthy slap in the face." The language is strong and immorality is vivid. Unfortunately this book leaves the reader with a very negative stereotype of Native Americans. This is supposed to be part of the multicultural emphasis that attempts to familiarize students with other cultural practices, but it certainly won’t do justice to forming alliances between the two cultures.
