Possession: A Romance

by A.S. Byatt

This is "post-modern" mystery novel about literary scholarship. One community reviewer said, "This book would appeal to a very specialized audience. The study of great literature or pursuit of literary knowledge is noble, but why not just have readers read the real thing? The passages of bad Victorian-like poetry are cumbersome, hard to follow, long winded, likewise the reproduced ‘letters.’ Why not just read real poetry and letters from that time period?" Another reviewer said, "This is TEDIOUS, difficult to read, and hard to keep straight all of the counterpoint plots. I think another novel depicting Victorian romance and research strategies would be a better choice."

Be sure to read C.S. Lewis’ The Abolition of Man about literary criticism.
