Drama Movies

These are dramatic movies or movies that don't fit a genre.

A History of Violence

A History of Violence stars Viggo Mortensen, Maria Bello, Ed Harris, and William Hurt. The cover has a review that it is "The Best Movie of the Year". I don't agree with that but it was full of interesting twists and turns. Tom Stall (Mortensen) stops two thugs in an attempted robbery and ends up with his picture in the newspapers. Carl Fogarty (Harris) finds out that his advisary is still alive and comes back for retribution. This movie kind of inverted my flawed character that redeems himself. He starts out as a nice guy with a family, does something really honerable, which allows some really nasty people to find him. At that point, you finally see his flawed character, which allows him to redeem himself. That may be why I didn't give it 7.6 of 10 rating like the reviewers averaged on IMDb. I think it is a good movie to rent before you buy.

Apocalypto

I think this is a complete movie. The tricks they play on the man with no children are cruel but extremely funny. Especially when the old man gives him something to rub on his testicles. Apparently it burns and he ends up running around holding himself. At the same time, his wife is trying to wash out her mouth. The whole village is rolling on the ground laughing. After the pain goes away, even he can laugh. The rest of the movie goes about showing how vicious the Mayans were. Some of it seems more than excessive. Jaguar Paw (Rudy Youngblood) eventually escapes and that puts you on the front of your chair. He eventually uses a frog to create a poisonous dart for a handmade blow gun that he uses to kill one of the Mayans. This lets him get away. I got curious and found there is a frog known as the poison dart frog because it is that posionous. The end of the movie is Jaguar Paw leaving a beach were the Spanish are coming ashore. This was the end of the Mayan empire.

The Last King Of Scotland

The Last King of Scotland is Forest Whitaker playing Idi Amin. The movie covers Amin's rise to power through the eyes of Nicholas Garrigan (James McAvoy), a Scotish doctor who ended up being Amin's personal physician. Whitaker's portrayal of Amin is really spooky. You have people trying to kill Amin and he keeps being saved by this irreverant Scotsman.
