Open Range

Open Range was an interesting movie. It had Robert Duval and Kevin Costner as a pair of crusty free grazers. The free grazers were people that ran a herd of cattle through the open range and used the grass or etc. to feed the herd. When there were local people that were also using the open range, conflicts occured. There were numerous award wining actors involved. The average review on IMDb was 7.5/10. That was about where I would have placed it. Not enough of my style to watch 10+ times like I did Costner's Dances With Wolves but I have watched it 3 or 4 times since it was released on DVD.

Dances With Wolves

Dances with Wolves was probably the first movie that I went to see 3 or 4 times in the theater and then, purchased and watched it many times more. The link is to the extended version on Amazon. The original version was just over 3 hours and the extended version was 4 hours. It is hard to sit down and watch a 4 hour movie but they fortunately have an intermission and the pause button on the DVD player really works well. I linked to the extended version because it is the only one without missing pieces that should make you wonder about what happened. Dunbar's (Costner) acceptance by the local Sioux tribe and his naming, I think, fairly portrayed their culture. The Pawnees, in the movie, were really bad people. Tribal interactions were not typically nice. The treatment of the tribes by the US Army was also not very nice but if you read the history books about the typical interaction of the US Army with the tribes, the only good indian was a dead indian.
