Artist of The Week

Music Page

30 August 2006 - My real music list is now found in my "What's New" web page.

Since I purchased a Creative Nomad Zen2, I don't have a favorite artist of the week. I take them all with me where ever I go. I have left this behind just to show how I got to where I am now.

I started a new list. It is the Artists that I listen to by the week. Carro (coche depending on your version of español) is what I am playing in my automobile. The MP3· Cd is the CD that I take with me when I go to Old Country Buffet for dinner. I have a Panasonic CD Jogger that I listen to while I am eating. About 1/2 of the time, it is a CD of some sort on learning español. The rest of the time it is a mega-mix of albums that I like. Each represents 5-10 hours of music. I own each of the CDs that I have included in my mega-mixes.

The mega-mixes are no longer being created. My 2nd Panasonic CD Jogger started running through alkaline batteries and I purchased a Creative Nomad Zen2. It has all of the features I consider to be important and uses USB-2 to maintain your tracks. I currently have 228 albums on the Zen2. All of the albums listed below and a number of new ones such as Olga Tañon's Sobrevivir and the Argentine artist Pimpinela are in my "Playing Now" list. I keep coming back to Jaunes' album "Un dia normal". A new singer is Jimena. They experimented with her first album and most songs provide interesting listening. One of the most important albums for me was Enrique Iglesisas's Quizás because it was the first album that I understood many of the songs.

The following list has the structure of  MP3-CD#, "Artist" - "Album". The songs are all mp3vbr, which means MP3 but converted using a variable bit conversion rate. It will use 90-351kbs as needed. All of my MP3 players will play mp3vbr. This reduces the amount of noise produced by the MP3 conversion and still produces a small file. A typical 256kbps conversion is 7-10 MB and a 128kbps is 1/2 of that. A sample of massive conversion errors is Lucero's Prisionera from "Mi Destino". She begins the song talking over background music for around 40-50 seconds. When you convert this song using the typical 128kbs, you can't understand anything she says. Converting it at 256kbs doesn't get rid of all of the noise but reduces it to about 90% of what it was. Doing a digital extraction and using a 60% mp3vbr is pretty clean. The conversion rate varies from 90kbps to 420kbps. The size of the converted file is just about the size of a 128kbps conversion and has none of the massive conversion errors.

I am waiting for the EACD CDs to arrive. They are digital instead of pulse width modulated, which is a major step up, and are clocked at 1.25 MHz instead of 44.1 KHz. This is not that important for low frequencies but most of the high frequency noise will disappear.

I am using a Creative Soundblaster Audigy Gamer to digitally extract the audio from the CDs. All of the previous conversions were analog conversion. Digital is straight off of the CD. Digital may not always work but you can always convert an album using analog conversions. You may have to connect your sound card to your home audio/video system to do the conversion and when you do that, all you lose is the CDDB information. You will have to enter the artist, album, and track information by hand. I find that I am frequently one of the people to add an album to CDDB and this process in not difficult to deal with.

The test on quality will still be Lucero's album called "Mi Destino". The destiny (destino) of my transfers depends on track 6, which is called Prisionera. With a little bit of tongue in cheek, I think I have been a prisioner of the RIAA, and the destiny of my audio purchases depends on the beautiful Lucero.

I still maintain that RIAA should point out where these conversion errors are and the massive copying of songs on the Internet will turn into increased sales. If they really protect everything, then you can expect massive analog conversions to occur and people that wouldn't think of passing songs around will join the pack. What they are refusing to understand is that everyone with a computer has a digital sound studio in their home now.
