My Impala is the car I grew up in, and my real
project. The car is a 1966 Impala SS convertible with a 327 and a
Powerglide transmission. My dad bought the car new, and it had very few
options, other than the power convertible top and the Super Sport package.
While I was growing up, it became known to everyone in my family that when I was
old enough the Impala was my car. Well, during my senior year, the engine
spun a main bearing, and from then on, I considered it my car. I rebuilt
the engine and transmission that year, and had the differential done at the same
time. Officially, my dad transferred it into my name when I graduated from
college and started paying for my own car insurance.
I put more than 60,000 miles on it in college, and for the
first couple of years after college, but stopped driving it for the most part in
1994 when I bought my pickup. In 1998 I started restoring the car, which
includes a body-off-frame restoration. The body has cancer in the
wheelwells and the quarter panels, and the floor is rotted out in places due to
the 25+ years it spent in Western Washington Currently, I am in the
process of working on the frame and suspension. It is going very slow due
to other projects, and the issue of needing to have time and money available at
the same time. I have had the frame powder coated, and have stripped the
front suspension in preparation for the same. I hope to have the front
suspension powder coated this winter, and maybe even assemble it on the
frame. I have already purchased all the suspension components to install
on the frame, and have gone with urethane bushings wherever available.
Below is a garage shot from before I had the frame powder coated, but I will get
a new picture in shortly.
